The motivation for this reseearch is the use of CT imaging for early detection of lung cancer at a stage where it may be more effectively treated.

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death among women and men in the United States. There has been significant interest in the last few years in using spiral CT lung scanning for lung cancer screening of patients at high risk. Encouraging results from lung cancer screening trials using spiral CT in the US, Japan and Germany have created significant interest and excitement that early detection and characterization techniques may be brought to bear in the fight against lung cancer. Early detection and intervention may significantly reduce the mortality rates of lung cancer and improve patient prognoses.
